What Happens If My System Fails Inspection?

Understanding Deficiencies

When a fire sprinkler system fails inspection, it means our technician has identified one or more deficiencies — conditions that do not meet the requirements of NFPA 25, local fire codes, or the system's original design. Deficiencies are categorized by severity:

Impairment (Critical):

The system or a portion of it is out of service and cannot protect the building. Examples: a control valve that cannot be opened, a broken pipe with no water supply, or a failed dry pipe valve. Impairments require immediate action. The building may need to be evacuated or fire watch implemented while repairs are made.

Deficiency:

A condition that does not render the system fully out of service but reduces its reliability or does not meet code. Examples: a corroded sprinkler head, a missing FDC cap, a pressure gauge that reads incorrectly. These must be corrected within a defined timeframe (typically 30 days, though your AHJ may specify otherwise).

Recommendation:

A condition that is not yet a code violation but may become one or indicates deterioration. These are documented for your awareness and future planning.

Your Responsibilities After a Failed Inspection

  • Review the written deficiency report provided by our technician
  • Prioritize impairments for immediate correction
  • Schedule repairs with a licensed contractor before the AHJ deadline
  • Notify your insurance carrier if required by your policy
  • Keep the deficiency report and repair documentation on file

Reporting to the AHJ

In many jurisdictions, fire protection contractors are required to notify the AHJ of significant deficiencies — particularly impairments. We will advise you if this applies to your situation. Corrected deficiencies should also be documented and available for the AHJ's review.

Our team can handle repairs for most deficiencies identified during inspection. We will provide a clear quote and prioritized action plan.
